You have to be blind not see what's happening here
You have to be blind not to see what's going on here.

The major record labels have a good thing going here. They control who can create music for distribution where they supply the promotion for high price. That's thier business model. Recording labels sell thier services to musically artistic people wishing sell thier creations. The cost of doing business with a recording lable is huge. The musician gets to sell thier product but 97% of the profits go to the recording label as part of the agreement the musician agreed to get the labels services.

Now you know what the Recording Label's business model is maybe you can see why that model is threatened and in need of changing.

With technology today those musically artistic customers that the Recording Labels court are no longer needing the full services offered by the Recording Labels. Musicians can record thier own music at a fraction the cost of recording label would charge. The musician can get CDs made for much less than what a recording label charges. The musician can promote and distribute the music for less that the costs that label charges. So why should an artist agree to pay the fee the recording label charges?

Lets say your in business of making widgets. You pay an organization to design, produce, promote and distribute you widgets. Then you find computers allow you design the widget yourself. The internet allows you to access customers directly and you ship the product directly to them. You find the internet also allows you to promote your widgets. All in all your profits increase by huge amount taking advantage of technology available today but the organization you used to use suffers because you no longer need thier service or need thier services to much lesser degree. Do you think it wrong for this to happen that laws should be in place to prevent you as businessman from reducing costs using technology?

I'm sure those who sold processing time on mainframes were upset with process of technology too. They lost business to those who bought the PC to do the work themselves in house instead of contracting out with a large corporation for processing time. You didn't see them lobbying for new laws to prevent this did you.

Now no law maker in thier right mind would pass laws to prevent the use of technology by business that allow them to do for themselves what they used to pay others to do for them. The RIAA knows this and so do most people. That's just common sense. So the RIAA stirs up a story that gets law makers attention. That story is losses from piracy. They make wild figures of losses in the Billions all the while thier label's clients, the artists, continue to sell more and more CDs.

In the end we all lose. Artistic expression is muffled and artist themselves remain starving artists fighting for any bones that the Major Labels toss them as the Major Label picks a select few artist to create a culture that is profitable to them only.

Like I said you'd have to be blind or just purposefully closing you eyes to the problem because you have vested interest in keeping the old business model going.
