When I was younger (I won't say when), CBS ran a series called "CBS Reports", but it was commonly called "CBS Distorts". That was long before the Internet.
Everybody is entitled to an opinion, that is guaranteed by the First Amendment (Opinion: but then again, what do Politicians care about the Constitution?), as long as it is an opinion. If it is presented as fact, better be able to back it up or face libel & slander charges. Opinion: Unless you are rich enough to buy off the Government.
Unfortunately, the Internet has dealt itself a bad name. The "liberal" technogeeks who fought for no Government intervention early in the Internet days have given us spammers and porn in our mailboxes every day, and spawned identity theft. (I supported that position until I saw the unfortunate consequences). The formation and continuation of rumor as fact does nothing to improve that image.
What I read and see in the media is taken with a jaundiced eye. I do see, and use, the Internet as a powerful tool for sharing information in real time and for open discussions. But, let's show the traditional media what real ethics are, otherwise we're no better. - Posted by: Middle of the Road Posted on: 10/05/04 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
