It is rather obvious Microsoft does not wnat the browser to grow.
Right now, Microsoft can make sure that no new technology gets put into the basic browser. Who would use any new features that were NOT on 90% of desktops?? So, when Longhorn arrives in two years, the only way to get a richer "web" experience will be to use the proprietary features of Lonhorn. Notice that these applications will run inside of the browser or outside. Just the kind of confusion Microsoft wants to create among users.

The strategy is really quite obvious. It might work.
