Nobody knows what will happen
I think it is a mistake to have high expectations of Longhorn OR to write off Longhorn. The truth is that nobody has the slightest inkling of how good or how bad it will be. Some people will say that history will tell you that MS has never made a secure OS, so why should we expect it now. And others will say that MS never had this kind of competition in the past (meaning a usable AND secure OS), but whenever they've had any kind of competition in the past they've always risen to the challenge (e.g. Windows 95 beat out OS/2 through better usability and ease of programming). And the truth is that both sides are right, but also both sides take their own side too seriously.

Longhorn may become the best thing to ever happen to computing. Or it may crap out. Linux (especially on the desktop) may completely catch up to and even surpass Windows/Longhorn by the time Longhorn is released. Or it may have too high a mountain to climb, or simply stagnate. Nobody knows.

The best option is to simply educate yourself about your choices to the fullest and do everything in your power to always keep your options open (meaning don't let yourself get boxed in) so that when Longhorn does come out, you will be in a position to take the best available option.
