Not quite correct about Javascript and .NET

Even MS's standard .NET controls for ASP.NET use Javascript so discouraging it's use would not help MS. Most server side controls that comes close the the same end-user experience as a thick client utilizes Javascript (or VBScript, yuck) and that includes server side Java. i.e. Menus and mouse over events. ActiveX was always a problem, but I am not sure that Javascript was a problem. Now that server side Java has matured I am not so sure that Java applets are necessary, they are just more baggage to download.
