IE is old, stale, and boring ON PURPOSE.
Since it is over 90% of the market, that keeps the perception of the web as old, stale, boring. Then the new proprietary Longhorn technologies will seem like a gift from God when they arrive.

IT WOULD BE VERY EASY FOR MICROSOFT TO MAKE IE STANDARDS COMPLIENAT, ADD TABS, ETC. THEY ARE KEEPING IT OLD AND STALE ON PURPOSE.

But, that said, not sure how much longer they can hold out.
