Microsoft wants the browser to die.
They want to get you using proprietary things from Longhorn in place of the browser. They will blur the lines between what is the browser and what is the OS so that many user will not know the difference. Just like many users still think AOL is the internet. This will guarantee another wave of lockin.

And, everything ailing IE would be very easy to fix. Microsoft with 50 billion in the bank, and they are saying they don't have the resource, there are other priorities???? There are working open source examples of everything they would need to do. It is just that they still get a log of lockin from the IE quirks. Somebody, somewhere uses every one of those little quirks, and it makes IE the only browser that works renders all websites.

Well, that said, Mozilla / Firefox are going to give Microsoft problems since Longhorn will not arrive for two years. Actually, if Google can come out with a Firefox based browser that included local search engine, email client, web services interface builder, etc, that could be huge. What we need is a brand name alternative. Right now, Google is cool, Microsoft is NOT.
