IE is the perfect example of problems with no comp.
When a company has no competition it becomes complacent about it's product. Companies work on a demand status. If there is no new demand and everyone is simply using their product then there is no reason to invest in improvements. This is short sited for them because in the long run someone always will eventually make it better, but in the short run it looks good for the bottom line. MS has not put any money into IE because it seemed they had won and they didn't need to. I can't imagine how much better the web would be functioning today if there was an equal balance in browser competition. Just look at what the small amount of pressure from Mozilla and Opera has caused. People have said from the beginning that integrating all this stuff into windows is a bad thing. The poor quality of IE is only the beginning of things, just think of how bad the video world will get if they win with that.
