Competition Foothold
People were moaning about IE integration into Windows becaused it eliminated any chance for a company to SELL a browser. Firefox is free.

"The Mozilla Foundation, spun off from AOL Time Warner last year as a nonprofit, carries on the open-source development work launched in 1998 by Netscape Communications and its Mozilla.org wing. Considered a pioneer in the realm of company-sponsored open-source work, Mozilla nonetheless failed until recently to produce a strong challenger to IE."

MS isn't facing competition. MS is facing a user exodus. I left a long time ago and even spent money on Opera and have never regretted the cost traded for reduced vulnerability and enhanced usability. People that turn to Firefox have had enough of the lack of innovation and security for IE. It was only a matter of time before open source would surpass MS. BTW, even the earlier beta's for Firefox surpassed IE with regard to innovation. It's just now that the hype and hoopla are getting press.

Note that no one has been able to compete and sell an alternative OS either. Linux is gaining ground because it works well and it's free too. This is great as we all need an alternative to the MS empire. But please realize that nothing really competes with MS in the "pay for software" desktop marketplace. We can only hope that the F/OSS community continues to thrive.
