RE: FCC to look into firms' use of customer data
While the FCC is "looking after the consumers' rights" WRT
to this complaint, they should look into a few more
initiatives:
1- they should create laws to force current opt-out
practices to be opt-in instead so the consumer is actively
controlling access to their information. I shouldn't have to
fill out a form or waste time calling a voice mail system to
say that I don't want something that I never asked for in
the first place; especially if I have to pay for something if I
don't actively opt-out of it.
2- Customers should be compensated financially when a
company directly benefits financially by the use of
information collected through a business transaction
(things like selling or giving access to customer lists for
"use by affiliated partners" would fall into this category).
Or better yet, this kind of thing should not be allowed at
all without explicit consent from the customer EVERY time
this information is reused.

Simply doing business with someone should not open the
door for the use of customer information for secondary
purposes without the customer's explicit consent. In my
experience, I have yet to see any case (WRT my customer
information) where a something that a company
considered to be "in my best interest" actually turned out
to be.
