One problem with reading the Koran and holding Muslims accountable for what you read is that, according to Islamic doctrine, it is impossible to translate the Koran. The reason being that the Koran is the literal, verbatim Word of God that was told to the prophet Mohammad. Not an interpretation of what God said, but what He actually vocalized in the language that Mohammad spoke and wrote. Any translation changes the Word and so it is no longer the word of God. Now, how Muslims rationalize the fact that a lot of them can't read the original language of the Koran and are therefore denied access to the Word is beyond me.
