RE: IRS trudges on with aging computers
I'm sitting here at work, at the IRS, waiting interminably for AMS to process a very simple request. I've attempted to access caseload inventory four or five times today without success. Finally, the inventory appeared a few minutes ago. I selected a taxpayer's name with intention of opening a VERY basic screen of information (ie. primarily text / shouldn't affect bandwidth much, if at all).

I waited two solid minutes before getting an "Action canceled" error message and being booted off inventory. I opened inventory again (lo and behold, it actually opened twice) and then clicked on the taxpayer's name again. Two more minutes went by and I was presented with the same error message.

This has been occurring fairly frequently for the last month. "Updates / upgrades" almost always result in these issues - we had the same problem about six months ago, also for a month in real time.

Our internet is unpredictable, Outlook is awful, several critical systems are available approximately 70% of the time, etc. Most IRS employees know nothing about technology or how computer systems should work. When the economy returns to some degree of health, I'm leaving the IRS - it's a bad, bad joke, especially since taxpayers have no choice but to deal with an incompetent, compulsory entity.
