I admit my question was rhetorical
There are few totalitarian regimes that our media elites will take issue with. (Pinochet was possibly the only recent exception, and then only because he was a right-wing dictator as opposed to Chavez or Castro)

It doesn't take much imagination to see what must be going on in the back of their heads; something like "If only we were in charge here, it would actually work".
