Lou Reed Is Right
Mr. Reed, having come at age in the sixth decade of
phonograph technology, got to work with talented,
experienced engineers who knew how to optimize the
sound for vinyl. I've had the experience of going from
playing to pressing (analog tape to dat master to vinyl) and
the most eye-opening part was the way the mastering
engineer made the music sound better on vinyl then it
sounded on the DAT.

But, vinyl is more fragile and is distributed as a tangible
good. The digital recording can be both tangible and byte
stream. Lower costs of distribution, lower costs of
production and more music. (More music suggests lower
prices and a more difficult living for everyone up and down
the music industry.)

I wonder if we have pushed up against the limits of 41K
sampling and our next approach for bringing more
musicality to the sound of our digital samples is to double
the sample rate.
