RE: Gosling: Blu-ray victory to spur Java creativity
Not sure what Gosling was implying with this:
"I think that a lot of the software development community--which I find really, really frustrating--is fixated on Web apps. They write their stuff on the server, it generates HTML, and there is this really big piece of the community that thinks that that is the universe,"

How could all of this be true? there is lot of AJAX/client side code and OpenSocial just got started that will leverage client side even more. Servers will be increasingly limited to providing backend services with much of the presentation controlled by javscript/client side scripts.

palyers may ship BD-J but in general it will be difficult on part manufacturers in releasing such large platform on a CE device. Simpler solutions for interactivity may be needed such as Interactual. Even with Interactual technology one has to ask - out of 90Million+ households with DVD players in US - how many have players with Interactual technology in them? It is is a very nice solution for enabling interactivity using HTML/Javascript but it didn't penetrate non-PC DVD player market as much one would expect(if it did take hold in the market then where are the numbers? )

The fact that there are 1500+ DVDs with Interactual content of course shows interest on part of producers to create. However since these have been primarily for viewing on PC, validation of the need on part of user for interactivity on TV probably needs more compelling story than mere technology adoption. It is possible for browser enabled players to provide more options than BD-J for content producers.
