The entire idea behind the Aegis warships with VLS technology is to create an electromagnetic shield around the fleet. One that tracks and engages surface, air and sub-surface targets with ranges up to 300 nautical miles.

This was a functional test of the SM2 Block III surface to air intercept missile. I remember when I was still in the Navy, these things were still being developed and tested for use aboard existing VLS capable ships. Looks like they figured out the bugs and got it to work.
