RE: NYC prosecutors back ban on sex predators
Unless this ban also includes serial killers, burglars, armed robbers, or fraudsters, this law is clearly motivated by something other than keeping the internet "safe".

Whether such extra laws exist or not, this is a slippery slope. If these laws continue to spread, it's only a matter of time before websites allow or disallow people server-side. They could grant certificates to any user, and revoke them based on any basis the legislators or even the webmaster says. The general web-surfing public would be assumed to be a "unsavory" until they proved their innocence with the granting of this special certificate, similar to the way software buyers require a CD key, or that the CD remain in the disc drive while using the software to "prove" ownership.

The whole premise of the internet is that it should be freely available. Lots of good folks are fighting to keep it that way. It is the greatest collection of human knowledge since the library at Alexandria was burned. By restricting access to slivers of it based on "unsavory" predilictions, we will have lost something that will be difficult to replace.
