I'm torn on this issue
Being the father of an 11yo daughter who uses facebook & myspace, I want her to be protected. She is not allowed to talk to anyone online who she doesn't know in real life. I monitor her usage, and she knows I check up on her.

I know my brother is a registered sex offender. 10 years ago when he was 19 he was involved with a 17 yo. Long story short, it was a bad deal. When he got out of prison, the girls parents invited him to come live with them. Not something you would expect if he truly did anything improper, yet he is still a registered sex offender.

Having a sex offender register their online personas will only work to catch the "honest criminals". It is too easy to get a new online identity for this to really do anything substantial to block a true predator. The only purpose it will serve is allowing them to tack extra years onto the sentence AFTER they've been caught doing wrong.
