"What is the problem with proving WHO you (really) are? I am an American living in Spain, and Spain like most all other countries of the World, requires a National Identity Card."

The fact that, as an American, you have chosen to live in Spain, indicates that indeed you do not have a problem with a national ID card. Good for you.
I am an American living in The United States of America and I do have a problem with a national ID card. This is one of many reasons I do NOT live in Spain, or, as you say, "most all other countries of the World". Some evening, when you have nothing better to do, read the Constitution of The United States. You will find, in there somewhere, that I have the right to be sucure in my person, property and documents. That gives me the Constitutional right to have control of those things. The United States government and the Dept. of Homeland Security, cannot, will not, and should not secure or protct those documents for me. That's my responcibility and perogative.
Enjoy your time in Spain, and most of the rest of the world. I like it here and intend to do what I can to Keep it just as backward and none world like as it has been.

Oh, by the way, I'm delighted you are continuing to support my country with your share of the tax burden.
