RE: The legislation behind a national ID
This is far more dangerous than 100 BinLadens. More data on innocent Americans is the problem, not the answer. We had loads of data on BinLaden and his intentions in the 90's (ref. Ollie North's comments for example), and look at what we did with it. Nothing. It got lost in the shuffle of too much data.

The thinking here is 'more information is always better...we'll figure out what to do with it later'. This is a dangerous and unconstitutional mindset. As it applies to Homeland Security it's never been demonstrated to have the slightest impact on terrorism, national security or national defense.

But our leadership still can't seem to find a 6'3" Arab with diabetes, or keep my military records from being stolen by hackers. Their ONLY mission is to provide for a common defense, (at which they failed miserably IMHO), not systematically chip away at constitutional freedoms. Now they need more haystack in which to find a needle? Baloney.

It's always the choice of weak leadership to solve problems at the expense of the many instead of generating a real solution within the context of their actual authority. This is one of those.

Mr Senator, Mr. Congressman, Mr. Chertoff, what personal assurance and what remedies will you provide me *right now* that this data can not, and will not, be abused outside of it's alledged intended purpose? Not just now, not just by the current regime, but for years to come, and by those yet unknown.

Waiting for your reply. -Jim
