There are already ways to access YouTube via mobile. YouTube's videos can currently be accessing through proxying sites such as Tinytube (I wonder if that will change like it has before) and sites such as vixy.net, mediaconverter.org and media-convert.com will automatically download and convert videos from YouTube and other video portals. Furthermore, proxying sites such as keepvid.com will download the flv file to the phone, although this is only useful to Windows Mobile phones with the appropriate software.

Why have YouTube been making vendor-specific deals anyway? Why can't they just produce a universally-compatible mobile site available to any phone that supports the technology (rtsp:// streams and MP4 video, which applies to most phones from most manufacturers) and *not* shutting those third parties who already do this?
