This isn't new
When I was in school in the 1970s, I was accused by one teacher of copying work straight from a textbook. In fact I had used the book and others as sources, but it was in my own words.

I think there is something in asking kids to provide (some) work in handwritten form. It forces a discipline of thought and planning that Word never will. After all, the idea of school isn't to replicate what they will do at work, but to develop their thinking process and ability to analyse information and express themselves.
