It amazes me...
It amazes me that the porn industry (which hijacks hundreds, if not thousands of domains a year) feels threatened by the Internet. I feel strongly this is another case of an association like the RIAA or MPAA trying to protect old, outdated distribution methods by trying to force the newer to go away via court actions or other threats. (BTW: Didn't work with cassette recorders or 8-track recorders)

Yes, many innovations in photography and video have apparently been spurred by the adult film industry, but I expect that such developments would have happened anyway, as people realized their shot of their naked spouse (or whatever) was being seen by a number of people.

As for the Internet supporting streaming video? Again, I have my doubts about the development being more than assisted by this industry. The fact is that anyone with a dialup connection (and there are still millions even in the US) is frozen out of a video stream, and even Internet radio is painful on dialup, if it even works at all.

As another example, can anyone confirm the adult film industry's claims that Polaroid developed their Polaroid print technology as a direct (and sole) result of adult-film industry demand? Somehow, I doubt it. (See above, about the development of film)

I feel little sympathy for this industry as a whole, although I do (to some extent) toward the people who are being exploited on film. When I did research, I found plenty of studies that showed pretty conclusively that certain practices found in almost all adult films are never done by the average couple, whatever their orientation toward intimate relations. I've seen a few studies that seem to point the other way, too, but those are rare and usually too small a sample (perhaps targeted?) to be statistically useful.

Could I be wrong? Yep. I'm not an expert on the history of photography, videography or (really) the Internet, so I admit that my statements could easily be wrong.
