Can social networking co-exist with the workplace?

How do you define "social" in the business sense?

I don't consider myself a pessimist, optimist, but realist. There remain a slew of industries which require, at some level, social interaction to insure, among other things, closure of contracts, acknowledgement of quotas, date setting for events that are not necessarily socially based, as well as ideas gathering for writers, authors, journalists, and so on. I believe the real question is how businesses define the difference between what is or isnt business relevant. Obviously this is a technology that's on the move in about the same way the telegraph and telephone were. It would be foolish to turn a blind eye and bury oneself in the proverbial sand of Corporate Blocking. It would be responsible to consider how best to use this technology since it is as much for the long term as the World Wide Web.
