The Internet is an 'active' example of irony and contradiction in practise: it is both blessing and curse; it is the epitomy of freedom of expression - and yet people are convicted and incarcerated for unspeakable misuse and dissemination of objectionable material upon it on a regular basis.

On a more specific note, eCommerce and Web Marketing embody the free enterprise and spirit of entrepeneurial endeavour the United States was built upon - and i would object to such enterprise being penalised as a consequence of legislation entailing as much.

So my question is this: do we really need to regulate another industry - or at least avenue for free enterprise?

Don't misunderstand me, i realise there are definite instances of practises in ecommerce and related business ventures that most reasonable persons would consider as needing regulation for sheer legal and content reasons, but as to whether a blanket regulatory action over all web activity is needed ... well, i have genuine reservations. Let us hope that this does not become the case.
