AT&T is lying to you
Jeez, those people at AT&T are unbelievable.

Obviously there is some way for you to get messages, since you HAVE been getting some.
I've had my dealings with AT&T home phone service and U-Verse, and found their customer service is utter crap. They lied to me on numerous occasions about the services they were offering: charging incorrectly, incongruence between what the sales person said and what the service ended up being, endless calls to customer service (many of which were routed to the wrong departments, making me waste even more time).

I ended up canceling all services from them, and will never give them my business.

I also highly doubt they do not save text messages when all other companies do so.

Since they are charging you for service you have already CANCELED with them I would seriously consider reporting them to the Better Business Bureau.
And of course, get another service provider whenever you're able to.
