You forgot, the artists do NOT own all the rights...
The media cartels control almost all the rights, with the artists having almost none. When an artist signs with a label, they are essentially signing all their rights away.

In fact, artists can only perform "their own" music in public with the permission of the label and a commercial agreement. This is one of the greatest evils of the current cartel system.
