"artists' backs"? That is crap.
The artist gets less than 10% of the selling price of the typical CD. The rest goes into the distribution channel companies and, for the most part, the recording company.

What is being fought is not the rights of artists to be paid for their efforts but the desire of the recording companies to perpetuate their outmoded distrinbution model for, without that and with artists beginning to vend their product directly to the consumer via for-pay Internet download sites, they are out of business.

Just as the government couldn't protect buggy whip manufacturers by outlawing motor cars, they should not be acting to prop up that antiquated business model either.
