Cognitive dissonance
Amazon is betting that e-books aren't a total e-bust.

Well, DUH! They're doing very well, as a matter of fact.

Or are we talking about the costs-more-than-a-paper-copy, loaded-with-DRM, only-works-on-one-expensive-player, can't-loan-to-a-friend, next-year-won't-be-readable-because-they-changed-the-DRM-again stuff?

But electronic books have failed to catch on the way some predicted they would. Likewise, e-book readers haven't been a huge draw.

That's funny -- Eric Flint seems to be quite happy with the royalties he's receiving on e-books, and Baen Books reports that they're making money hand over fist.

Somebody must be doing something wrong, looks like.
