The RIAA doesn't give them anything until the album is paid off, then MAYBE
Then MAYBE they get a few percent. The record companies take almost all of the money. Small to medium sized artists LOVE P2P file sharing because it's a way for them to market themselves without having to rely on huge record companies. In brazil, a whole sub-industry of pirated music has become one of the most vibrant in the world. Radio head, gave their most recent album away for free in MP3 downloads on their website and still sold 2.3 million copies of the album quickly after it was available.

The only people that lose out as a result of filesharing are extremely large corporations and trade associations which at this point serve no purpose other than making sure they sell as much as they can, for as cheaply as they can. They work harder and harder using technology to mold whatever test-marketed good looking idiots they can find into pseudo-musicians, working to have the lease offensive sound that they can. It's long been known that the music industry currently markets their music to the 8-13 year old age group because they're the ones that drive the most album sales.

Do you really like the music you hear on the radio, or do you just like it because you recognize it? If you listen to modern pop all of the time, when's the last time you listened to the clash? If you listen to punk (and it's not punk if they wear a tie, as a rule. If you disagree, research the bands in the sex pistols era) all of the time, when's the last time you listened to fusion jazz? If you listen to fusion jazz all of the time, when's the last time you've listened to classical?

Stop the madness. Stop all of this nonsense. Stop being 'satisfied' with the manufactured BS you hear on the radio.
