EBay is hurting itself -- and legitimate sellers
eBay has looked the other way for far too long. I think that this has hurt eBay and
legitimate eBay sellers as well as the companies whose goods are being ripped off.
In jewelry and luxury goods, all the bad stuff and crooks on eBay has chased the
good stuff out. Everyone I know who tried to sell legitimate jewelry on eBay has
given up because they could not compete with the crooks. The percentage of fake
stuff is now even higher.
eBay cannot, of course, police every small seller. But, it could do a LOT more to
police the volume sellers who are selling most of this stuff. They do no want to do
this because these guys generate a lot of revenue for them. But their failure to do
so is destroying eBay as a legitimate marketplace for this sort of merchandise.
