corporate welfare
JDT,

Every industry, from insurance and financial to transportation and entertainment, now expects taxpayers to bail them out. This is just another form of corporate welfare. These industries have three things going for them:

1. An abundance of unethical politicians willing to sell their constituents down the river in exchange for campaign contributions.

2. Ignorance. Relatively few people even know these issues exist. Some of those who do spend their time writing on message boards instead of picking up a phone to call their Representatives and Senators. Others do nothing at all.

3. We've constructed a system that enables federal politicians to piggyback otherwise unfavorable language (language that would never survive the floor on its own merit) onto existing bills to sneak the legislation in through the back door. I mean, really, who has the time to read these several hundred page bills AND understand the contents? We're too preoccupied with our own lives, and politicians wouldn't have it any other way. Citizens are not nearly vocal enough in demanding transparency in government.
