Patents protect rights.
What possible reason could anyone have for removing patent rights on software other than for getting something for nothing? Patents protect the rights of people who spent a significant portion of their life to creating something and now you just want to storm in like a socialist and demand that their hard work be made open to all? For what? The eternal betterment of "Der Fatherland"?

Way to go there Che.

This argument is eternally tossed about and is entirely worthless. Somehow people like you believe that if one person can create a way to do something then no one else can or should be required to and we should all walk on the shoulders of giants.

Forget it. Patents and the protection they provide are what allows people to focus on the hard stuff so they know that they can get paid after all that hard work is done.

If the type of patent rights you are speaking of are the ownership rights an employee grants their employer for any creations made while functioning as an employee well, that's the decision they made when they accepted the job offer.
