RE: Police Blotter: Craigslist toddler giveaway ad sparks suit
Let's not overlook two very important word in this issue: "Mental Illness." It is not at all unusual that Esperanza does not acknowledge her mental illness. She is not ignoring it, she doesn't know it exists. Nevertheless, she is indeed mentally ill, in the qualified opinions of several mental health professionals. Her behavior is not unusual for mentally ill persons, particularly women. She is, in fact, incapable of caring for her children. Her lies are lies only if she knows the truth and knows that she is not telling the truth. They may not reflect reality, they may be falsehoods, but she may be telling the truth as it appears to her incapacitated mind at the time she tells it. Mental illness is sad, and the treatment of it is even sadder. She can be institutionalized for a time and medicated. but at such time as she becomes stabilized under her medications and treatments, she must be released. Almost all mentally ill persons, upon release from institutionalized confinement, soon stop taking their medication and stop attending therapy sessions, which would be useful for the treatment provider to monitor the person's progress or regression. The law has no force on a person who commits no crime, and being mentally ill is not a crime.

How about some compassion for the woman?
