How much really goes to the artists?

And how much really goes to the artist when you steal / infringe / < insert other euphamism > ? It would be like having sex with a hooker and then not paying just to teach her pimp a lesson. Either way, the hooker doesn't get paid.

Artists now have the technology to make their own music and distribute it online, bypassing the recording companies.

So buy from those artists. If you are truly against the RIAA, don't steal from their artists. That sends a far stronger message. When you steal/infringe, you are sending them a different message. You obviously know what the final answer is because you said it yourself: convince artists to distribute their own music online. The RIAA will crumble (or change) when the supply of artists dries up, not when you steal/infringe their product.
