antipiracy struggle propaganda
What an amazing piece of propaganda masquerading as journalism! I could understand if this was billed as an op-ed piece paid for my RIAA. But it does do so. In stead, it constantly takes the position that the recoding industry is the deeply wounded party and all individual as thieves or potential thieves.

You state that the recording industry "was a community hemorrhaging jobs, careers and investment in new music, amid a pervasive culture of looting." I must dispute this claim -- and that is all it is, a claim.

For years the recording companies have kept two sets of books; one book with the real earnings from artists associated with a particular label, and another book restating those earnings as much lower figures. Any artist requesting to see the earnings from the sale of their records would be shown the book with the lower earnings figures. The book with the 'cooked' figures would also be used for tax purposes -- simply put, a tax dodge. In short, the recording industry have acted as thieves for decades. These are not exaggerations -- there law suits pending in California related to these issues brought to court by artists.

If the recording industry is "hemorrhaging jobs" it has more to do with the double bookkeeping practices and an attitude of arrogance you have maintained for so long. Technologies have changed, and artist now have opportunities to distribute their music directly to the listener, cutting out the middleman. Both artist and listener benefit, and the recording industry does not. If jobs are being lost, using punitive legal action is not going to solve your 'issues' -- fear is never going to make people like or respect you, nor is it going to make people want to purchase recording from your member labels. This is a call sign that you must either change your business model, practices and attitudes, and adapt to new ways and attitudes, or fall by the wayside and become something for the history books.
