You're half right.
They'd save money by not going after file sharing (since nothing seems to work).

You're nuts if you think that paying artists more will make a difference. Will that get Johnny to buy that single or album instead of stealing it? no.

When people are complaining that a buck for a song is too much (granted I think virtually any price for lossy audio files is too much but I buy CD's). And when confronted with the fact that increasing pay to artists will increase prices, they eventually admit that artists are paid too much anyway.

Most downloaders are doing it, because it's free and why pay for something you can get for free. The excuses change from year to year, but ultimately, it's just theft (with the exception of the few who actually use it decide if something is worth buying).
