Well...: Learning the material actually helps you think about it critically.

Also, there aren't that many people out there (whether they are teachers or not) who know many reasons why anything is used "in real life." It helps if a teacher can "make it real" but they better not forget to make sure their students just know their stuff as well.

I've seen classes where they do great projects, but the kids just don't know why their projects work or not, and this in one of the top ten high schools in California.
