Not as absurd as it seems
US copyright law, including the DMCA, allow for reverse engineering of software for interoperability purposes; however the courts have ruled that including a banning statement in a shrinkwrap or clickwrap agreement nullifies that right. It is not such a far cry, I think, from them siding with the advertisers on this.

I suggest we let our legislators know how we feel BEFORE it comes to a court decision. Not that we can count on them to do the right thing, even when we tell them what it is. The DMCA and the Paranoid Act come to mind as recent debacles. Not to mention the *NEW* liberal Congress who were supposed to stand up to the President's abuses of power, who instead recently voted to expand his authority for warrantless searches and arrests. We may need a revolution, everyone writing worms to gobble the ads before they get to us. Or we could work within the system, convene a Constitutional Congress, and pass the CANTSPAM amendment.

When I first saw Blade Runner, I thought their concept of ads covering everything was a bit far-fetched. Now I'm not so sure. There's talk of cellphone ads, ads on eggs (12 for the price of 1.) What's next? His & Hers ad briefs? Hers with a crotch ad for ribbed Trojans, his with a crotch ad for Ortho-Gynol, both with ads on the back for KY?
