Why do marketeers constantly invent new buzz words for things which have been around for years? Surely "Pulse" is another way of describing an online user poll or survey?
Conversational marketing appears to be yet another in the endless supply of such terms.
If a marketeer as you suggest is able to influence an online community or blog then the blog is nolonger independant and as soon as users become aware of this they will tend to stay away and not rate that content as highly.

Interactive competitions or Viral marketing will always be a useful and innovative form of marketing, as you point out the Dove campaign was a huge success and is in my opinion the sort of thing that we should all be striving for in each of our organisations.
Marketing hasnt changed recently, just that we are developing new methods of delivery ie the old survey in the street or telephone opinion polls have now become online polls and surveys.
