Can't market research result in change to products or services?
Not certain of your point.
Also, just as an online poll indicates something about only the people who voted (divided by the number of times they voted), so self-selecting responders may not say anything of general applicability about a product.
What would happen if you asked here what made Vista amazingly successful?
And then, even if you were to believe your responders were unusually likely to come from a particular demographic, how would you know whether the attitudes you discovered were the basis for buying decisions or were what the responder thought was appropriate on that site at that time?
