From Shanghai...
I moved to China 5 weeks ago and am in the process of obtaining my work visa. From my experience here and the stories I have heard from locals and other foreigners--I should be guarded with my comments lest my application be looked at differently.

I have been connected to the internet for about 14 years--that said---I can deal with the dirty SH streets, the horrible smells that seem to emanate from almost every block, the poor quality of food, the pollution etc...

...what really bothers me is the internet censorship. Of course I can take measures to ensure I gain access to the information I desire, however there is a latency trade-off. Severely annoying.

The people here are great and my current project is interesting, so I will be staying...for now. However, any thoughts I entertain about moving to another country come directly from the censorship issue.

Not being Chinese, the worst that can happen is that I am expelled from the country...yet for locals, you post the wrong thing and a white van takes you away.

This story is external propaganda to, as others have stated here, (1) make a case for further national monitoring and restriction (2) support local goods and services and comes at a time when the US alleges Chinese digital spying thus making the issue current and combative.

Regarding #2, it is interesting to note that flickr is blocked while yupoo becomes more popular. This is a trend I am sure you will see more of....typical drain. Garner intense foreign investment then lobby criticism/blockage at said investors once local competition is created.
