Singles back in the day.
If I remember, toward the end of the era singles cost about a dollar and albums were 9 or 10 bucks. That may sound like a bargain in this day of 12 or more tracks on a CD, but remember the average album held about 45 minutes of music, 22.5 or so per side. You didn't get more than nine or ten songs per album, so it wasn't that great a savings. Then as now, some artists had a reputation for releasing a couple of good singles for radio play and filling the rest of the album with junk, or pulling a "bait and switch" with album tracks that weren't anything like the released singles. The "B" side (that's the side with the song that wasn't released for radio play) was a good way to find out if like the artist's work beyond what hit the air waves. So "back in the day", singles were often a pretty good bargain.
