I just hate when you can't reply in context. Top-posting sucks. Anyway ...
Replying to you specific points:
1) While I agree that our, the U.S., government is spending out of control, you can increase tax revenues without raising taxes. If you lower certain taxes which encourages business to perform and grow, or consumers to spend, you can increase tax revenues. Also, while watching a cable news channel (CNN, FOX NEWS, or something like that), a story flashing across the bottom of the screen indicated that if the IRS collected all of the taxes owed we could pay off the national debt. I have not researched this to verify, but it has a ring of truth to it.
2) No money or no insurance does not mean no health-care. Nor does it mean the only treatment you can get is in the emergency room. For example, while listening to a talk radio show about personal finance, a lady called in about her brother's situation. She said that her brother was 25 and his sole source of income was from delivering pizzas (<$20,000). I do not recall the circumstances, but had ended up having to have triple-bypass surgery. His health insurance only covered $3,000 of the $250,000 surgery. So he was not refused treatment because he didn't have insurance or money. The advice given to the sister was to have her brother sit-down with the hospital's financial person and discuss terms of payment. The adviser indicated the hospital would probably knock at least 90% off of the bill and work some reasonable payment schedule based on his income.
Closer to home, my Mom was having problems in her throat so she went to the doctor. My parents are on social security because my Dad got fired from his last job and he is unwilling to move from his small city to find a job. But they are both under 65 and so they are not yet eligible for medicare. The doctor found some small growths in my Mom's throat. So they performed a day-surgery to remove the small growths and had them biopsied (?). Fortunately, the growths were benign. The whole thing costs about $8-10K. My Mom was treated despite not having insurance or proof of money to pay. I offered my Dad to help with the bills. He refused and told me that he told the hospital he could pay $25.00 a month and they accepted his terms.
Personally, I prefer our health care system. We do not ration health care, and thus lower the standard of care for all. People from around the world come to the U.S. for treatment. And despite the World Health Organization's opinion of our non-universal system, U.S. health care ranked #1 in a number of categories in their studies. - Posted by: tmostyn Posted on: 09/10/07 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
