Here's just a few examples that immediately cross my mind as I ponder your post:

if it wasn't for Apple, the mouse driven GUI might never have made it out of
Xerox's basement and Bill Gates may have never have had MAC OS '89 available to
imitate to create Windows 95.

The Smithsonian Institute awarded the iMac their prestigious U.S. National Design
Award in 2000. Oh yeah, the iMacs were, ironically, "candy colored". And somehow
candy colored seemed important enough to the Smithsonian Institute.

I think an Apple employee also recently received the U.S National Design Award
from the Smithsonian Institute for his part in designing the iPod.
