NBC has more to lose
Apple will lose a few TV shows from their selection. NBC, meanwhile, will lose their whole online revenue stream. Their alternate way of selling their shows (their own custom web service) is hopeless in the short or medium-term.

Even long-term, Apple has a very powerful integrated-stack strategy (software, web service, content), in addition to current market dominance, that NBC will never match. Even if NBC ponied up a great web service and a top-quality media player a la iTunes, people want a one-stop-shop for media, they don't want to go to each vendor's web site. They don't want to play media from one vendor in one player, and media from other vendors in another player. And they certainly don't want more DRM and higher prices!

As the article says, NBC's only chance is that this act will cause others to see Apple as vulnerable and do the same thing that NBC is doing. But I doubt others will follow along, because there is no viable Apple alternative to go to.

It's going to be a very tough road for NBC. I guess the example of the record companies wasn't enough for them. I wonder when entertainment executives are going to get brain one and realize that DRM is hopeless and the only way to make money is to provide a lot of innovative entertainment in a convenient, friendly, low-cost vehicle?
