Not necessarily a change in what we buy...
I'm 35. I used to have access to a huge collection of vinyl records at my parents'
house. My first music purchase was cassette tape (I think it was KISS, the one with
"Charisma"), then in 1980 I started buying CDs. Now it's 2007, and there's very
little in the way of music that I want to buy anymore - I've completed my
collection. Nothing released by the synthetic bands is interesting to me.

The last three CDs I've bought were from live acts in sports clubs (you know, the
ones with talent who mention at the beginning and the end of the set "buy our
CD!"). I haven't bought new music for a year.

I haven't acquired new music through alternate means, it's just that between my
~4000 song collection and the free-to-air advertising station (supported by the
occasional piece of commercial music), I find there's nothing more I want to listen
to.

So from the 1980s where I'd buy a new CD every fortnight, to the 2000s where
there's nothing new under the Sun - it's not piracy or digital sales that have
reduced my demand for CDs, it's imply the fact that there's nothing else out there
I feel like listening to so much that I'd part with the best part of a fortnight's lunch
money.
