3 reasons labels are still necessary...

1. It's impossible to get a song on broadcast radio or a video on Viacom (parent company of MTV etc) without being on a major label. And like it or not, those are still the most effective means of marketing an artist, song or CD

2. It's impossible to get a CD in major retailers - walmart, target, best buy, etc - without being on a big label (including major minor labels). Again, this is where the majority of non-digital sales take place.

3. The major labels are still the best possibility (as pathetic as they are) for an artist to receive marketing support for their record.

Yes, the major labels are in an absolute tailspin over digital downloading. Their top-heavy business model is failing dismally, and they're fighting obselence.
