- WHY are there RECORD LABELS?!?!?!

In the age of ubiquitous DIGITAL DOWNLOADS, where ANYONE can send an MP3, why in the world are there RECORD LABELS?!?!?!
Can't the artist simply circumvent the scheisters in the middle and deal directly with the major PPDL sites like iTunes, etc?
