Issue more fundamental...

This issue is far more fundamental to human technological advance and changing social/economic structures than most people realize. What is really going on here is that the way humans are receiving their multimedia fix is changing. CD sales are sliding because CD's are no longer the best way to access music media, therefore, they will continue to slide into irrelevancy.

What will likely happen is a very large change in the role of record labels, as well as a change in the way music is priced online. I'd personally like to see some sort of a music stock market which prices songs based on demand. Hopefully, this would lead to people no longer liking sh**ty music (sigh). Either way distribution of proceeds will have to become more equitable.

The current contract disputes will resolve themselves over time as current contracts sunset, and artists and their rep's realize that times are changing and start to alter their negotiations accordingly.
